Number of prisoners getting death penalty by 2020 over 400, highest number of prisoners from UP


 According to the NCRB's 2020 prison data report, the number of prisoners getting death penalty in the country's jails by the end of the year has been more than 400. At the same time, this year, the sentence of 29 such prisoners was commuted to the death penalty. Read the full report.

The number of death row prisoners lodged in the country's prisons was 413 at the end of 2020. This information has been revealed in the latest data released by the central government. Of these 413 prisoners, 94 were sentenced to death in 2020. 

This information has been given in the data of the 'Prison Statistics India' report for 2020 of the NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) which comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs. In 2020, the death penalty of 29 convicts was commuted to life imprisonment.

According to the report, "During 2020, 94 people were executed in the country. Of these, 15 each were from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. 14 persons were awarded the death penalty from West Bengal, eight from Bihar and one each from Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. '

Of the 29 people whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, seven were from Maharashtra and five each from Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. According to the report, out of the 413 prisoners who received the death penalty, 319 were sentenced in 2019.

UP has the highest number of death row prisoners

In 2020, the number of prisoners sentenced to death in jails stood at 0.36 per cent of the total inmates. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of prisoners in jail with death penalty at 53. This was followed by 49 prisoners from Maharashtra and 40 from Madhya Pradesh.
